The term intersectionality was coined by Kimberle Crenshaw, who, at the time, taught law at the University of California, Los Angeles, Law School. “Black feminist scholar-activists, a number of whom were LGBTQ, developed theoretical frameworks to serve as a model for other women of color, to broaden feminism’s definition and scope.” 1 During this time, feminism was broadly focused on the experiences of heterosexual, white women while disregarding issues such as sexuality and race.
